6 easy ways to mix and match different patterns
Hi Lovely,
can you imagine that there was a time when my interior was only done in simple and monotonous colors? Do you want to know why? I honestly didn’t know how to choose complementary colors and different patterns that go well with each other. Mixing and combining different patterns looked like a great challenge, but only because I didn’t dare to take the first step into the world of patterns and colors. Believe me, after you’ve tried it once, you’ll be amazed how you missed such an experience for so long.
Yes, it’s true that basic colors should have a permanent place in your interior design, but adding patterns can create greater visual depth.
Here are a few clever and easy ways to introduce different types of patterns into your home.
1. Decide on a color palette for your home or room that you want to decorate:
This step can be either the most difficult or the easiest of the whole process, depending on whether you already have a particular color in mind or not. If it’s easy for you, then hats off and if not then I fully understand, because it feels like you’re making a life decision that you don’t really want to make. I mean most of us don’t want to see the same colors every day. Nevertheless! My approach to this problem is to opt for 2 different color palettes, of which you can use the second as an alternative later in the year if you like.
So before you start thinking about patterns, first choose a color palette that you particularly like. This will make things a lot easier for you when it is time to decide on patterns that should go together and not clash.
After you have chosen the color palette, decide whether warm or cold colors are more suitable. Remember, every color has its warm and cold tones. Pick a base color, then choose an accent color or two to add a little more character to the room.
2. Let neutral colors come to the fore when using large prints
Look, the easiest and simplest way to do this job here is to choose neutral colors for the walls, floors and large furniture like sofas. Once that’s done, you can start thinking about patterns for your pillows, blankets, chairs, lamp lights, and other key furniture.
You will quickly notice how wonderfully the strong patterns can be combined with the neutral tones. This is one of my favorite techniques for bringing a little more risk into combining and adapting patterns.
3. Big and small
When choosing your interior design, pay attention to a balanced variety of sizes of the patterns. As long as the color palette stays in the same color family, you have nothing to worry about. The more variety of sizes your patterns have, the more interesting and inviting the room will feel. For example, you can use larger pattern shapes for your window curtains and small pattern shapes for your accent pillows and other textiles.
4. Find a pattern that fascinates you and incorporate it into the interior design
If you are a fan of dots, flowers, stripes or checkered patterns, should you mix and match them with various decorative textiles and fabrics?
When moving you will see how your accent pillows, the window decor, the bedding and the lampshades fill the room and make it pleasant.
For example, you can use neutral base colors for your bed linen, choose matching accent pillows and patterned lampshades to create a balance with the bold patterns.
5. Tone on tone colors help highlight prints
Use tone on tone colors or different color saturations and hue levels for your interior design to make your decoration even more interesting. Pick one or two decorative pieces that have large prints, then choose furniture with narrower and smaller dynamic prints to refine the overall look.
6. Use wallpaper to add that extra something to a room
Many of us only think of textiles when it comes to integrating patterns into home decor and forget that patterns are also used on wallpaper.
If you decide to integrate large and bold prints, choose to only bring them in as accents, for example on a wall behind your bed or in the dining room behind the dining table. Then use smaller prints or maybe even just wall paint for the adjacent walls. This will help you to bring a balance into the beautiful room.
Wallpapar makes it easy for you to reveal your love for bold or subtle prints in the background, without overloading your entire interior with it.
Have fun trying it out.
